Los cient\u00edficos que estudian la biolog\u00eda marina aprenden sobre las criaturas marinas y sobre c\u00f3mo viven, crecen e interact\u00faan con su entorno. El oc\u00e9ano cubre aproximadamente <strong data-start=\"592\" data-end=\"622\">el 71% de la superficie de la Tierra<\/strong>, lo que lo convierte en el mayor h\u00e1bitat de nuestro planeta. Entre ellos est\u00e1n <strong data-start=\"886\" data-end=\"1004\">los arrecifes de coral, los estuarios, los bosques de algas, las praderas marinas, las pozas de marea, los fondos marinos arenosos y rocosos y el mar abierto<\/strong>. Cada h\u00e1bitat alberga distintos tipos de plantas y animales. La vida marina abarca desde organismos diminutos como <strong data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1146\">el fitoplancton y el zooplancton<\/strong> hasta animales muy grandes como <strong data-start=\"1174\" data-end=\"1184\">las ballenas<\/strong>, que pueden llegar a medir m\u00e1s de <strong data-start=\"1206\" data-end=\"1224\">30 metros<\/strong>.   <\/p><p data-start=\"1227\" data-end=\"1376\">La ecolog\u00eda marina es otra parte de la biolog\u00eda marina. Estudia c\u00f3mo conviven los animales y las plantas del oc\u00e9ano y c\u00f3mo interact\u00faan con su entorno. <\/p><p data-start=\"1378\" data-end=\"1694\">La vida marina es muy importante para las personas. El oc\u00e9ano proporciona <strong data-start=\"1439\" data-end=\"1472\">alimentos, medicinas y materiales<\/strong>, y tambi\u00e9n sustenta el <strong data-start=\"1495\" data-end=\"1521\">turismo y las actividades recreativas<\/strong>. Las plantas y animales oce\u00e1nicos tambi\u00e9n ayudan a producir ox\u00edgeno y desempe\u00f1an un papel en el control del clima de la Tierra.
